The Capital City of Live Music

Hello Friends,

Austin Texas really is the home to Live Music. The hype and excitement exceeded all my expectations over the past 5 days at the South By South West Music Festival & Conference.

This was my first trip to the festival and I couldn't be happier that I went - and highly recommend it to anyone who likes live music. This festival is World class and it's because all the craziest musicians and music nuts come and live together for 5 days. They eat, sleep, party and celebrate together as one.

The venues are the coolest thing about shows in Austin. From outdoor courtyards, back gardens, packed open air clubs to parks and of course Stubbs BBQ. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing the 'Super Moon' whilst listening to Scala & Kolacny Choir covering Radiohead's 'Cree with a Texas Tea and brisket in hand. Screw GLEE.

My SXSW started with a trip to the MTVU Woodie Awards on Wednesday night. It was a fun experience and the entertainment was amazing.

In my pre-SXSW post I was contacted by an Austin local. Here's an insider's perspective on SXSW and the characters that visit Austin during the festival. Thanks Hunter:) These ring very true - but I will not reveal to which I most resemble.

Some other highlights for me were meeting Nic Harcourt from KCRW. He's someone I've been listening to for years and he can boast some of the best interviews in the radio World.

I never had the pleasure to see or run into Huw Stephens from BBC Radio 1 - but look forward to hearing his post reviews and recommendations.

SXSW 2011

Hello Friends,

Tonight feels like Christmas eve for the music lover in me. Tomorrow I'm headed to Austin, Texas for the famed South by South West Music Festival and Conference.

I've never been before so am very anxious and a bit nervous as the festival itself seems a bit overwhelming to say the least. 5 days in a city that hundreds of bands come to in an attempt to get to that next level. Some of the acts are also some of the biggest names in the world - but they bring attention to the festival on a World stage and open peoples eyes/ears to the up and coming.

I've been reading and hearing about SXSW for years now via blogs, music sites, magazines, radio shows and television. More recently I read about the festival in a John Niven book entitled 'Kill Your Friends'.

It seems like I've been responding to emails and RSVPs for months now and the lists of 'Must See' artists continues to grow. I'm personally hoping to stumble across some amazing acts and learn about as many new acts as possible. The festival organizers are the best in the business so I think we can safely say that all these acts will be amazing.

MTV are hosting their annual Woodie Awards tomorrow night as a kick off to the music portion of SXSW. The performers list includes Foo Fighters, Wiz Khalifa, Sleigh Bells and Two Door Cinema Club. It promises to be a fantastic little night - I can't wait to see all these acts live.

I will give a full brief once I return and hopefully be able to share with you some amazing finds from my travels. Until then - here's a few I am hoping and looking forward to seeing in the next 5 days.

A few of these are at the @britishmusicbiz showcases which will be hosted by BBC Radio 1's own Huw Stephens. I'm a huge fan of all he and Zane Lowe speak of - so this feels like a very special opportunity indeed.

I'm also really looking forward to seeing Waterloo Records as it's apparently one of the World's finest.

Music Videos Are Back

Hello Friends,

I do realize that music videos never actually went away - but it needs to be stated that they've garnered some serious interest of late and for good reason.

I'm in a luck position in that part of my job is to watch music videos. It's surreal and sometimes makes me laugh. It also keeps me awake at night as I take it very serious.

Like an artists or not - today's biggest stars are doing some great stuff and keeping the audience's attention for a longer period of time. For an industry that's taken so much stick in recent years - it's a good shot of adrenaline that will hopefully bring it back to life. There's still a ways to go - but for a generation with A.D.D. it's a massive step.

Here's a list of newish videos I recommend you take a second look at along with reasons as to why. If not for the message then for the simple fact that they're creative and entertaining as hell.

• P!nk - 'Fucking Perfect' - The message here is amazing and should set a parent's mind at ease that someone like P!nk is speaking directly to their kid.
• Britney Spears - 'Hold it Against Me' - Visually stunning and garnered over 700k viewers when it premiered in on Much, MTV and MuchMore recently.
• The Strokes - 'Under Cover of Darkness' - This video doesn't even premiere until midnight - but I am willing to bet it's a beauty:)
• Lady Gaga - 'Born This Way' - This lady makes movies. She's not shy to admit that she's taken a page from Madonna - but also sending positive messages to the World. Great cover BTW;)
• White Lies - 'Bigger Than Us' - Let this one speak for itself.
• Dr. Dre feat. Eminem and Skylar Grey - 'I Need a Doctor' - Yet another great movie.
• Rihanna - 'S&M' - This one was banned from television before 9pm. Perhaps it was on purpose - but regardless Rihanna is turning heads and looking damn good doing it.
• Ke$ha - 'Blow' - Unicorns drinking champagne. Enough said.
• Sleigh Bells - 'Rill Rill' - The hipsters have been great at videos since forever. Listen to this tune on good speakers!
• Kanye West featuring Rihanna & Kid Kudi - 'All of the Lights' - This video is actually dangerous for people's health and had to be pulled from television.
• Katy Perry featuring Kanye West - 'ET' - Yet to be released - but I'm certain it's going to be big.
• The Verve - 'Bittersweet Symphony' - Just keeping us honest with the greatest video of all time:)

5 Newish Tracks for the Weekend

Hello Friends,

I just got the new Adele album and am excited to give it a full once over. The 2 singles have been epic and The Cure cover of 'Lovesong' will not disappoint.

This week started with some great music as the wonderful little Eliza Doolittle dropped by our offices to serenade us with some tunes. It continued on to her showcase at The Drake where she took it to the next level with her full band. Star in the making.

Next week is equally as exciting around here as Scotland's own Biffy Clyro are in town for a show. The band will also be dropping by our flagship show New.Music.Live. to perform.

Canada

Hello Friends,

As we come upon the 40th anniversary of The Juno Awards I feel it only fitting that I take time to reflect on the amazing music and scene that has come from Canada.

I've had the pleasure of working in the Canadian music industry for over 12 years now and need to pinch myself each-and-every-day. I got my start with a legendary publicist named Jane Harbury. Jane ran the publicity for the Juno Awards at that time and showed me the ropes. She taught me from day one how to do things right. Doing things right 'The Canadian Way' meant to treat each artist with the respect they deserve. Musician's put their most honest of thoughts out there for us and so the least we can do, as an industry, is return that and bring this music to the masses together.

It's amazing the people that I've had the chance to work with, learn from and meet over these years - and (most of the time) a pleasure to see that they are down to earth.

From boardroom meetings about the next Tragically Hip release to studio sessions with artists like Sarah Harmer, Sam Roberts and Masters like Paul Anka - it never gets old. The idea of working in this business seemed like a dream growing-up - but it all came from a love of the amazing music I was listening to while doing so.

Like many teens growing up in the burbs I often found myself headed up the 400 series highways to festivals throughout the summer. There was Edgefest, Summersault, Another Roadside Attraction, Eden Music Festival to name a few. They were all day long outings to see a few big names and to learn about a dozen more. They never let you down. I learned so much about Canadian acts and their International friends they brought on tours.

Canadian music has found it tough to cross borders and oceans at times. Then there's other times (like now) they shine a light back at this massive land and allow the World a glimpse to what we're about. Most persons around the world wouldn't be able to differentiate Canadian and American music - which is fine - but as Canadians we sometimes find that hard to grasp. We support our bands so much so that we want to see them succeed on the World Stage. Most of my cousins that live in the UK only know of Bryan Adams and Celine Dion as Canadian. They refer to Bryan Adams as 'The Vancouver Groover' which, as a Canadian, I've never heard - but I digress...

I'd love to share with you a list of solid Canadian tunes that meant something special to me in one way or another. There are many more - but I'd like to get some sleep tonight so I've decided on these ones.

5 Reasons Glasvegas Rule

Hello Friends,

Last week Glasvegas offered a free download of their latest single 'The World Is Yours' on their site. The song is incredible so go there when you have a second.

In the last 2 years I've probably played their debut 50 times from start to finish. It had to go on the back-burner so that I could still enjoy it at a later date.

Since this track became available I've had to return to the debut and get my fill as we wait for the next album. It's also allowed me the chance to dig deeper and find some great rare cuts from the band and covers that are mind blowing.

The band are set to release their 2nd album sometime this spring and I for one am ecstatic. In the meantime here are 5 reasons Glasvegas rule.
